I Was Told I Was Having Girls During Five sᴄᴀɴs Surprise The Ended Up With Triplet Boys
Convinced that she’d be welcoming two girls, the mum even splashed out £500 on clothing for what she thought would be her ᴅᴀᴜɢʜᴛᴇʀs, only to then realise there’d been a huge ɢᴇɴᴅᴇʀ mix-up.
Dental therapist Gina Dewdney, 34, was over the moon when she was told on five sᴇᴘᴀʀᴀᴛᴇ ᴏᴄᴄᴀsɪᴏɴs at different sᴄᴀɴs that two of the ᴛʀɪᴘʟᴇᴛs she was carrying would be girls. She and her husband Craig, also 34, took their sonographer’s word for it and prepared themselves for the arrival of their babies, stocking up on pink clothing and accessories for their ᴅᴀᴜɢʜᴛᴇʀs.
However, they were left sʜᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ to find out during Gina’s 24-week sᴄᴀɴ that the babies they were led to believe were girls actually weren’t – and she was expecting identical boy ᴛʀɪᴘʟᴇᴛs.
Gina revealed: “I had a feeling I was pregnant with twins at the start as I felt ᴛᴇʀʀɪʙʟᴇ. I ʜᴀᴅ ᴍɪɢʀᴀɪɴᴇs ᴀɴᴅ ᴇxᴘᴇʀɪᴇɴᴄᴇᴅ ʙʟɪɴᴅ sᴘᴏᴛs ɪɴ ᴠɪsɪᴏɴ ᴀʟᴏɴɢ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ ɪɴsᴏᴍɴɪᴀ. Wʜᴇɴ ᴡᴇ sᴀᴡ ᴛᴡᴏ ʜᴇᴀᴅs ᴏɴ ᴏᴜʀ sᴄᴀɴ at 13 weeks, I wasn’t surprised but I was in total sʜᴏᴄᴋ when there was a third. I had sᴄᴀɴs every week as ᴛʀɪᴘʟᴇᴛs is a ʜɪɢʜ-ʀɪsᴋ pregnancy. At 16 weeks we were told they are identical twin girls and one boy. I was excited to have the best of both worlds.”
Gina revealed that she and Craig snapped up bags full of girls clothes, including girly bibs and dummies, and the pair had even started looking at girls’ names for their new additions. Building up a bond with her “ᴅᴀᴜɢʜᴛᴇʀs”, Gina admitted she felt “ᴅᴇᴠᴀsᴛᴀᴛᴇᴅ” when it was later revealed at her 24-week scan that the girls were actually boys.
The trio were delivered in one minute and 52 seconds, with Jaxon weighing 2lbs, Jenson weighting 2lbs 7oz and Jimmy the heaviest of the three, weighing 3lbs.
“The babies were born at the exact same time which is very unusual for ᴛʀɪᴘʟᴇᴛs,” Gina said.
Looking back at her pregnancy, she says she can “totally understand” how the sonographer got the ɢᴇɴᴅᴇʀ of her babies wrong for weeks.
“The babies would never sit still,” she said. “There would always be a leg or an arm in the way, so it wasn’t easy for them to see each baby from all the angles. We are beyond grateful for the staff who cared for our babies at the hospital because they wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them,” Gina said.
While the boys look the same, Gina revealed that already her three sᴏɴs have different personalities.
“Jimmy is the joker, Jenson is dramatic and Jaxson is completely ᴄʜɪʟʟᴇᴅ ᴀɴᴅ ᴊᴜsᴛ sɪᴛs and watches the other two,” she said.
Sharing an insight into what life is like with newborn ᴛʀɪᴘʟᴇᴛs, the mum-of-three teased her house has become “ᴄʜᴀᴏᴛɪᴄ”, as she revealed the pair get through 30 nappies a day, around 24 bottles and a “tub of formula every 48 hours”.
As for the bags of girls’ clothes she preemptively bought, Gina says they’re still stashed away in the cupboard and she’s holding onto them just in case she and Craig welcome a ᴅᴀᴜɢʜᴛᴇʀ in the future.
