If there is anyone who is willing to sacrifice anything for you, it’s your family.
Meet Baby Colton
When Colton Land was born on July 24, 2019, he was initially a healthy baby, but after a week of standard newborn screening, his parents received the sad news.
His Condition
As it turns out, Colton has a rare disease called SCID or severe combined immunodeficiency AKA the “bubble boy disease” where he has no immune system and has to be completely isolated to avoid any infections because his body can’t fight them off.
Its Effect
Colton’s condition changed his family’s life. His mom, Kayla, quit her job as an Executive Administrative Assistant and shifted 4-year-old Krissy and 8-year-old Khloe to home-schooling because they were all afraid of bringing home infections.
Saving His Life
The doctors told the Land family that Colton would need a bone marrow transplant to save his life, so his sisters were tested via the Be the Match registry with a cheek swab to collect DNA to figure out who’s a match for Colton.
Khloe’s A Match
The family was hoping that Krissy would be the match “because she understood and she wanted to be the one to help her little brother,” Kayla Land told Good Morning America, but the results say that it was Khloe who’s a match for Colton.
Explaining To Khloe
At first, Khloe was really excited, and then fear started to kick in eventually. Kayla and her husband had to explain to Khloe that she was the only person who could save her brother’s life without forcing her.
She’s On-Board
After some convincing, Khloe was finally on board with the plan of saving her younger brother and her surgery was a success. She got to leave the hospital on the same day while Colton needed to stay for at least a month to get used to his new cells.
Thanks To Khloe
Kayla happily said, “Doctors have told us that around one year after transplant he can live a normal life as a kid and be out playing in the dirt and being with other kids.”
